You see, Cyril of Alexandria was not just some obscure, ordinary bishop; for eastern Christians, the bishop of Alexandria wielded roughly the same authority as the bishop of Rome wielded in the west. He seems to have been of an Alexandrian family and was the son of the brother of Theophilus, Patriarch of Alexandria; if he is the Cyril addressed by Isidore of Pelusium in Ep. In both, Hypatia's death was a result of a conflict between the Orestes and Cyril, later made a saint of the church. xxv of Bk. Hypatia's life is most commonly seen through the lives of the two men in charge of Alexandria during her life: pagan governor Orestes and Bishop Cyril. According to Scholasticus, an order of Orestes to control Jewish celebrations met with approval by Christians, then to violence between the Christians and the Jews. Cyril is well known for his dispute with Nestorius and his supporter Patriarch John of Antioch whom Cyril excluded from the Council of Ephesus for arriving late. The greatest achievement of Hypatia and her school in Alexandria was not introducing new ideas but carrying the flame of philosophical inquiry into an increasingly darkening age.
